SC CHEER Youth Enjoy Science Program
Training future cancer researchers begins at the high school level at Hollings through the
SC CHEER YES (Youth Enjoy Science) program.
SC CHEER YES aims to introduce the world of biomedical research – particularly cancer
research – to bright young students who would not otherwise have connections to an
academic health sciences center. The Hollings Office of Community Outreach and
Engagement partners with four Charleston County high schools that primarily serve lowincome students, with a goal to expand the program to additional schools.
After a rigorous application process, 15-20 students commit to two paid summer
internships at Hollings. The students spend their mornings in a classroom setting with
instruction on molecular differences in cancer subtypes, practical lab skills and research
ethics and lectures on different career paths from professionals across the MUSC
campus. Their afternoons are spent working in cancer research labs, and the summer
culminates with a research presentation by each student in a colloquim open to all.
