Hollings In Brief
Community scientists
The insights and backing of members of the community are
invaluable to cancer research. To incorporate community
members into our science in a more coordinated way, the Hollings
Community Outreach and Engagement team recruited and
trained nine people, representing all areas of the state, to act as
community scientists.
These community scientists will be actively engaged in reviewing
grant and fellowship applications, developing community-relevant
research questions and advising on ways to disseminate research
findings.
The team completed training in late 2025. Look for more
information in the coming year as the community scientists gain
experience in their roles!
Cancer support
People with cancer and their families need more than medical care.
That’s why our staff members are constantly looking for new ways
to support patients and families.
Art therapy support group
In 2025, our team debuted an art therapy support group. This
group uses the art-making process to help adult patients to process
their emotions around their cancer journeys.
The group meets for eight weeks, led by a board-certified art
therapist. Groups are available in Mount Pleasant and Florence.

Caregiver support group
Also in 2025, our social work team launched a caregiver support
group. Caring for a family member with cancer can be emotionally
and physically difficult. This group connects caregivers with others
in similar situations.
